Purpose of Event
Healthy Kids “Home Run” Clinic will be an annual Baseball Instructional Camp including a Nutrition and Fitness seminar for underprivileged boys and girls, ages 8 to 12 from various inner city organizations. This event will be held on October 14, 2006, at First Tennessee Fields. We believe this will provide an opportunity to present nutritional, fitness, and baseball instructional training to a group of kids who are at higher risk for poor nutrition and limited physical activity, both factors in the obesity epidemic. Our goal is to empower these children to make informed healthy lifestyle choices, be involved in fitness and athletic activities and reduce the incidence of unhealthy weight trends effecting our youth today.
This event grew out of the Shaping America’s Youth Town Meeting held in Memphis earlier this year in January. At that meeting, which included Governor Phil Bredesen, Shelby County Mayor AC Wharton, and the Assistant US Surgeon General, Dr. Woody Kessel, attendees were challenged to implement programs that would change the trend toward excess weight and improve kids health. Our sponsors are committed to making this a reality.
- The obesity rate in adolescents in Memphis is 1 in 4 age range 2 to 17 years of age.
- There is a sharp increase in diabetes in this group.
- Research indicates that the prevalence of overweight and obesity in African American females age 6-11 is 45.6% and 34.5% for males in the same age and ethnic group.
- Overweight Children are prone to depression and isolation from their peers
- Nearly 80% of children who are overweight will become obese adults.
- Obesity is preventable and reversible
- We need programs in Memphis and Shelby County designed to reduce and prevent obesity, and empower our children to make healthy lifestyle choices.
Each participant will receive a free Homerun Baseball Clinic T-shirt and a gift bag. Additionally, teens from various organizations will attend a train-the-trainer session prior to the event so they can assist the trainers the day of the clinic. This will allow them to take the skills they learn back to their community centers and continue the training segments.
